Fast Break Announces Partnership with PCA

We are pleased to announce that Fast Break Basketball has entered into a partnership with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA).  By partnering with PCA, we have made a commitment to place character education at the top of our organization's objectives and create a Positive Coaching culture in which athletes can grow, be challenged, and have fun.

As you know, the culture-changing process does not happen overnight.  We're here to put a structure in place that will allow our Positive Coaching initiative to grow year after year.

This initiative starts with a series of three separate workshops designed to help FBBA Officers, Coaches and Parents enhance the quality of the program, as well as teach life lessons.  Dates, times and locations for each workshop will be posted shortly.

Please refer to the Positive Coaching Alliance link on the main menu to learn more about the program.

FAST BREAK NEEDS NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP

Looking ahead, there is a need for a new generation of leadership to step forward at numerous key positions, as a number of people are retiring after this season.  FBBA must identify volunteers who are interested in filling these positions to ensure a smooth management transition between now and then if we want to remain a healthy and successful organization.

A listing of the Volunteer Job Descriptions is posted on the website on the Volunteer Information link for your review.  We are interested in talking with all interested parties about any and all positions.  Please send an email to commissioners@fastbreakbasketball.org stating your interest, and in the subject line, please type VOLUNTEER.

   2 minute drill

  for athletes:

W.A.G.

We use ‘WAG” to remember the ways that we can improve ourselves:

• W is for Watch.  You can learn a lot by watching someone do something that you want to learn how to do.  It might be a teammate or an athlete on TV.  Watch, and try to figure out how they do what they do.  Once you have an idea, you can go out and practice it.

• A is for Ask.  If you’re not sure about something you’ve seen, ask someone you’ve seen perform that feat how to do it yourself.  If he or she doesn’t want to tell you, don’t let that keep you from asking someone else.  Eventually, you’ll find someone who will tell you.  Then you can go out and practice.

• G is for Get Coaching. Sometimes, even after you’ve watched, asked, and practiced a skill, it still may not come easily.  You may need some extra help in the finer points of the skill.  In that case find a player or a coach to give you that extra help by asking, ‘Show me how you do that.’

for parents:

Game Day Tips

BEFORE THE GAME

• Tell your child you are proud of him or her regardless of how well he or she plays.

• Tell your child to play hard and have fun. Remind him or her that it’s okay to be nervous (“Nervous is normal”).

• Make a commitment to yourself to Honor the Game no matter what others may do.

DURING THE GAME

• Let the coaches coach. Avoid giving your child (or other players) advice during the game.

• Fill your child’s (and teammates’) Emotional Tank.

• Cheer good plays and good efforts by both teams.

• Mention good calls by the officials to others.

• Enjoy it. It’ll be over before you know it.

AFTER THE GAME

• Thank the officials for doing a difficult job.

• Thank the coaches for their effort.

• Let your child tell you about the game (avoid giving your post-game analysis unless asked).

Ask open-ended questions:

“What was the most/least enjoyable part of the game?”

“What did you learn from the game?”

• Tell your child again that you are proud of him or her! (especially if the game didn’t go well)

for coaches:

The Language of Self-Esteem

Our self-worth depends upon our perception of how important others value us.  For youth athletes, their coaches are some of the most important people in their lives. Children who believe they aren't good at a sport, but learn to improve, can make the same leap in other areas of their lives.  The language of self esteem is encompassed in two phrases:

1. "I can do this!"

2. "I can learn to do this!"

Coaches who reinforce these phrases give their athletes a great gift - the belief that they are strong enough and smart enough to handle whatever life throws at them.

** Change of Practice Times **

Fast Break Basketball provides each team with a practice slot every week during the season.  Those practices are all scheduled in an East Brunswick school, and only those schools that are recognized by Fast Break Basketball are covered under our insurance.

In the event that a coach/coaches rent an outside facility on their own in order to get "extra" practice time for their team, it is not recognized as a Fast Break sanctioned practice, and is therefore not covered by our insurance.  If an injury occurs, it is totally, 100% the coaches responsibility for any medical costs incurred by a player injury.

It is also the responsibility of the coach to inform the parents that this is not a Fast Break practice, and they, along with the coach assumes all responsibility.

Community Service

FBBA is pleased to announce that we now offer High School students two ways to earn community service credits.

1. Buddy Ball PAL - in our Buddy Ball Program, for our PAL volunteers, this is a very rewarding experience.  We keep an accurate account of every Community Service hour our PALS provide.  When appropriate, we support our PALS with reference letters.  Further information will be available on the Buddy Ball section of the website.

2. Official Game Scorer - we will be offering the opportunity to earn Community Service credits to those individuals who volunteer their time during our recreational games that are played during the week and weekends.  Click on the Community Service link on the left for contact information.
